Carlisle Companies is a publicly listed US industrial company that has narrowed its focus to building products, especially commercial roofing. It was founded in 1917 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and is now headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. Its operations are organised in two segments: Carlisle Construction Materials (CCM), which produces most of the group's revenue, and Carlisle Weatherproofing Technologies (CWT).

Carlisle Construction Materials

CCM makes single-ply roofing membranes (EPDM, TPO and PVC), polyiso insulation and related accessories for low-slope commercial roofs. Its single-ply roofing systems are marketed under brand names including Carlisle SynTec Systems. In 2024 Carlisle acquired MTL Holdings.

CWT covers air and vapour barriers, waterproofing, sealants, coatings and spray foam. Its largest acquisition was Henry Company, a building envelope systems company bought in 2021. Carlisle had earlier acquired Accella Performance Materials in 2017.

Market

Commercial low-slope roofing in North America is largely a replacement market, and single-ply membranes such as EPDM and TPO are among the most common roof coverings on such buildings. Carlisle sells through distributors to contractors, who can obtain manufacturer system warranties.

Membranes and insulation

The three main single-ply membranes differ in chemistry and seaming. EPDM is a synthetic rubber, usually seamed with tape or adhesive. TPO and PVC are thermoplastics whose seams are fused with hot air, producing a continuous welded sheet. All three are typically laid over rigid polyiso insulation, which provides most of a low-slope roof's thermal resistance, and may be fully adhered, mechanically fastened or ballasted depending on wind exposure and building design.
