Standard Industries is a privately held holding company headquartered in New York City. It traces its lineage to the Standard Paint Company of 1886, the same root as the roofing manufacturer GAF, and has grown through acquisitions into one of the largest owners of roofing and waterproofing businesses in the world. Its chief executive is David Winter.
Roofing holdings
The group's roofing interests span several continents:
- GAF, the North American maker of asphalt shingles and commercial roofing, which merged with ElkCorp in 2007.
- BMI Group, a European-based roofing and waterproofing group formed after Standard bought Denmark's Icopal in January 2016 (for roughly EUR 1 billion) and Germany's Braas Monier Building Group in April 2017 (for about EUR 1.1 billion). BMI combines concrete and clay roof tiles with bituminous and synthetic waterproofing.
- Siplast, a manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, mainly modified-bitumen based.
- GAF Energy, launched in January 2019 to develop roof-integrated solar products.
- Specialty Granules (SGI), a North American aggregates and mining business that supplies mineral granules of the kind used to surface asphalt shingles.
Other businesses
Outside roofing, Standard owns Schiedel, a European maker of chimney and ventilation systems, and the specialty chemicals company W. R. Grace, which it acquired in 2021 in a transaction valued at about USD 7 billion. It also operates an investment arm, Standard Investments.
Significance in roofing
Through GAF and BMI, Standard Industries is present in both the asphalt-shingle markets of North America and the tile and membrane markets of Europe, which differ considerably in materials and installation traditions. The group does not publish detailed public financial statements because it is privately held.
