BMI Group is a manufacturer of pitched-roof tiles and flat-roof waterproofing, owned by the US-based Standard Industries. It was created after Standard bought the Danish flat-roofing company Icopal in January 2016 (for about EUR 1 billion) and the German-listed pitched-roof group Braas Monier Building Group in April 2017 (for about EUR 1.1 billion), combining the two businesses. BMI operates mainly in Europe, with businesses in South Africa and Asia, and cites a history of more than 180 years through its oldest constituent businesses.

Brands

BMI sells under many national and product brands, including:

  • Braas (concrete and clay tiles, Germany and central Europe).
  • Redland (tiles, UK and Ireland).
  • Monier (tiles in several European and Asian markets).
  • Bramac (south-eastern Europe), Wierer (Italy), Cobert (Spain and Portugal) and Coverland (South Africa).
  • Icopal, Vedag, Villas, Sealoflex and Wolfin (bituminous, synthetic and liquid waterproofing).
  • Siplast and EverGuard (low-slope membranes).

Products

  • Pitched-roof systems built around concrete and clay roof tiles, with ridge, verge and ventilation components and underlays.
  • Flat-roof systems using bitumen membranes, synthetic membranes and liquid-applied waterproofing.
  • Green roofs and blue roofs (roofs designed to store rainwater temporarily).
  • Waterproofing for civil engineering.

Scale

At the end of 2016, just before the Standard acquisition, Braas Monier alone operated in 36 countries with 121 production sites, about 7,900 employees and revenue of about EUR 1.24 billion. BMI's country websites cover roughly 30 markets. Its businesses cover both pitched and flat roof markets. Many national brands date from long before the group's formation.
