DaVinci Roofscapes

DaVinci Roofscapes is a US manufacturer of composite roofing tiles designed to look like natural slate and cedar shake. Its products are moulded from virgin polymer resins blended with ultraviolet (UV) stabilisers. The company was already part of Westlake when Westlake bought Boral's North American building products businesses in 2021, and it sits alongside Westlake's roofing tile businesses.

Material

Composite or synthetic roofing of this kind is made by injection-moulding polymer compounds into tiles with textured surfaces and varied widths, so that an installed roof shows the irregular appearance of natural slate or wood. Compared with natural slate, composite tiles are considerably lighter and can usually be cut and nailed with ordinary roofing tools; compared with wood shakes they do not rot or split. Their long-term weathering depends on the resin and UV stabiliser formulation, and colour blends are designed to reduce the visual effect of fading. Manufacturers typically test such products for impact resistance (for example to UL 2218) and fire performance.

Market

Composite slate and shake are used on homes where owners want a slate or shake appearance without the weight or cost of natural materials, and in historic districts and homeowner associations that restrict roof appearance. DaVinci is one of several North American producers in this segment, along with companies such as EcoStar.

Ownership

Westlake, a Houston-based chemicals and building-products company, also makes PVC and other polymers, and markets DaVinci alongside its Westlake Royal building products.
