BAU is an international trade fair for architecture, materials and systems held every two years in Munich, Germany. It is organised by Messe München GmbH and is marketed as the world's leading trade fair in its field. It brings together architects and planners, investors, manufacturers, distributors and the building trades. Its website is bau-muenchen.com.
Schedule
BAU takes place in January in odd-numbered years. The next edition is scheduled for 11-15 January 2027 at the Munich exhibition centre (Messe München).
Relevance to roofing
BAU covers the whole building, but roofing is a significant part of the exhibition. Exhibitors typically include producers of:
- roof tiles, slate and fibre cement products;
- metal roofing and cladding;
- flat roof waterproofing membranes, insulation and roof drainage;
- roof windows, skylights and daylighting systems;
- building-integrated photovoltaics and solar roof systems;
- green roof systems.
Because the audience includes many architects and engineers, BAU is often used by large manufacturers to launch new products and systems aimed at specifiers, rather than at roofing contractors alone.
Programme
Alongside the exhibition halls, BAU runs forums and talks on topics such as sustainability, circular construction, digital design and building in existing stock. These themes affect roofing through requirements for energy efficiency, recycled content, product declarations and solar integration.
Related events
For the roofing and timber trades specifically, the German fair DACH+HOLZ International is more focused on contractors. In France, Batimat serves the wider construction market, and in North America the International Roofing Expo focuses on roofing.
