Activities

  • Installation guidelines. SRCA publishes guidelines for installing natural quarried slate roofs. They are available free to the public in both English and Spanish, which helps reach the many Spanish-speaking roofers in North America.
  • Directory. It runs a contractor directory and source lists so property owners can find slate specialists and materials.
  • Conferences. It holds an annual conference; the 2025 meeting was in Grove City, Pennsylvania.
  • Training. It is developing training on slate installation, repair, restoration and flashing, and lists courses and seminars.
  • International ties. SRCA is a member of the International Federation for the Roofing Trade (IFD) and takes part in its congresses and young roofer competitions. It is also an affiliate member of the U.S. National Roofing Contractors Association, and it exhibits at the International Roofing Expo.

Slate roofing basics

Natural slate is a metamorphic rock that splits into thin, durable sheets. On a roof, slates are laid in overlapping courses with a set headlap and fixed with corrosion-resistant nails or hooks. Good slate work also depends on correct flashing in metals such as copper or lead. Because slate roofs often last for generations, repair skills are as important as new installation. Many SRCA members work on historic buildings where matching the original slate and methods is required.

SRCA works in the same field as the National Slate Association, which focuses on technical standards and its design manual.
