Ruukki is the marketing name of the Finnish company Rautaruukki Oyj, whose Ruukki Construction business supplies steel roofing, wall cladding and building components. Rautaruukki was founded by the Finnish government in 1960 to supply steel to the country's heavy industry. The state gradually reduced its shareholding after a partial privatisation in 1994. In 2014 the Swedish steelmaker SSAB acquired Rautaruukki for about EUR 1.1 billion, and Ruukki Construction is now a subsidiary of SSAB.
Parent company
SSAB was formed on 1 January 1978 by the merger of three Swedish steelworks, Domnarvet, Norrbottens Jarnverk and Oxelosund, and is headquartered in Stockholm. It listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1989. The Rautaruukki purchase added about 2.6 million tonnes of annual steel capacity. SSAB is also known for its work on fossil-free steel made with hydrogen, delivering its first such steel in 2021.
