Roof walkway pads are sacrificial layers placed on top of a roof membrane along routes that people use, such as paths from roof hatches and access doors to HVAC units, drains and other equipment that needs regular service. They spread foot loads and take the abrasion that would otherwise wear or puncture the membrane.
Materials
- Thermoplastic walkway rolls or pads (PVC, TPO) that are hot-air welded to matching membranes; some are made partly from recycled membrane trimmings.
- Rubber pads adhered to EPDM roofs with compatible tape or adhesive.
- Granule-surfaced modified bitumen walkway boards or cap-sheet strips for bituminous roofs.
- Concrete or composite pavers on pedestals or protection mats, common on ballasted, inverted and green roofs.
- Coating walkway systems with embedded aggregate on coated and spray-foam roofs.
Design and installation
Walkways are usually laid out to give a continuous route, often in a contrasting colour such as grey or yellow on a white membrane so that walkers can follow it. Pads are typically spaced with small gaps for drainage, and must not block flow to drains. Many membrane manufacturers require walkways for warranty coverage in high-traffic areas.
Why they matter
Foot traffic, dropped tools, sharp debris and equipment servicing are leading causes of punctures and wear on single-ply and coated roofs. Walkway pads are a low-cost way to reduce that damage. They are also used as a safety measure to keep people on defined, slip-resistant paths away from roof edges.
Recycled content
PVC membrane manufacturers note that production trimmings can be reprocessed into rooftop walkway products, giving waste material a second use on the roof.
