A portable roll former is a machine that shapes flat metal coil into roofing or wall panels at or near the building site. The coil passes through a series of roller stations, each of which progressively bends the metal until it reaches the final profile, and a shear cuts the panel to length. Portable machines are usually mounted on a trailer or truck, or are compact enough to be set up on the ground or even on the roof.
Why form on site
- Long panels: panels can be produced in continuous lengths from eave to ridge, limited mainly by handling and thermal movement, which avoids end laps that would be needed with shorter shipped panels.
- Logistics: coil is easier to transport than long finished panels, and panels can be cut exactly to measured lengths.
- Lead times: contractors can produce panels as needed rather than waiting for factory orders.
Profiles
Most portable machines produce standing seam profiles, often several from one machine with interchangeable roller sets, such as snap-lock, nail-strip (fastener flange) and mechanical-lock seams. Some also form gutters or wall panels. Each profile requires its own tooling and setup.
Materials
Machines are rated for specific material types, thicknesses and widths of coil. Suppliers list compatibility with metallic-coated steels such as galvanised and aluminium-zinc coatings, prepainted steel, aluminium and, on some machines, copper, zinc or stainless steel.
Considerations
- Quality control: the roller settings, coil quality and operator skill all affect panel straightness, seam fit and the visibility of oil canning.
- Warranties: some panel and paint warranties apply only to panels formed on approved equipment or by certified operators, and coil suppliers may have their own requirements.
- Training and maintenance: rollers must be kept clean and aligned, and setup for each profile must follow the machine manufacturer's instructions.
- Site requirements: power, level ground, coil handling equipment and space to support long panels as they leave the machine.
Industry associations such as the Metal Construction Association publish educational material on portable roll-forming equipment.
