Animals and birds damage roofs by tearing into them to reach shelter in the attic, by nesting in vents and gutters, and by leaving debris and droppings that block drainage and corrode materials. The species vary by region: squirrels, raccoons, rats and mice, bats and birds in North America and Europe; possums in Australia and New Zealand; monkeys in parts of South and Southeast Asia; and insects such as termites and wood-boring beetles in many climates.
Typical damage
- Chewed or torn openings at roof vents, plumbing boots, soffits, fascia corners, gable vents and the junction where a lower roof meets a wall. Squirrels and rats can gnaw through plastic vents and thin wood; raccoons can pull up shingles and rip open soffit panels.
- Nesting in gutters, valleys, chimneys and vents, causing blockages and moisture problems.
- Lifted tiles and ridge pieces where birds or animals get underneath.
- Contaminated insulation with droppings and urine in the attic.
- Pecking by woodpeckers on wood siding and trim, and by some birds at sealant and membranes.
- Gravel or ballast displacement by birds on low-slope roofs.
Signs
Noises in the attic at dawn and dusk, debris on the ground below the eaves, gnaw marks, displaced insulation, droppings, and unexplained leaks near vents.
Exclusion and repair
Wildlife professionals generally recommend removing animals humanely before sealing entry points, often using one-way exits, and avoiding sealing during breeding seasons when young may be trapped inside. Local wildlife laws can restrict trapping or relocation of certain species, and bats and many birds are legally protected in many countries. Repairs then use durable materials: metal vent guards, heavy-gauge mesh over gable and soffit vents, chimney caps, and reinforced soffit corners. Trimming branches that overhang the roof removes an easy access route. Damaged insulation and roofing are replaced once the animals are out.
